Jim Hammond Will Make An Outstanding Sheriff posted May 9, 2008 I have known Jim Hammond for many years; yes, even when he worked as chief deputy for a Democratic sheriff and then when he ran himself for sheriff as a Democrat. The ticket he voted was never the factor that determined my respect for the man. The character he exhibited in his professional life, the Christian principles he applied to his personal life and the professionalism and integrity he reflected in the law enforcement community gained and maintained my respect for Jim Hammond. Two years ago, while I was chairman of the Hamilton County GOP, and long before there was any hint of our present crisis, Jim met with me and expressed his desire to identify himself publicly as a Republican. He cast no stones at the Democratic party or any of its leaders. He simply said he was more comfortable with the principles and values of the Republican party and so should openly stand and voice his convictions. I welcomed Jim Hammond to identify himself as a Republican and I openly stood beside him. Now the Democratic chairman condemns him for his decision and says that Jim is neither a Democrat nor Republican. It is sad that to some the label one wears means more than the character and ability of the man. I know that Jim can probably never be able to do enough to dispel the bitterness felt by those who are blinded by partisan politics, but I can tell you what he will do for our County. He will remove the cloud that hangs over the Department and he will restore the moral and pride of those who had it taken away from them through no fault of their own. He will move that Department, comprised of both Republicans and Democrats, toward accreditation and he will make us feel safe and proud again. His familiarity with times of crisis through Homeland Security and challenges faced In developing and training police forces in other countries will make Hamilton County an example for others to follow. I am proud that Jim Hammond has stepped forward to be our Sheriff. Let his detractors criticize his label. We'll be proud of the badge he wears as our sheriff. Bobby Wood repbobbywood@comcast.net |
