Unum, Lookouts Salute Some Of Area’s Top Teachers
posted May 9, 2008

Unum and the Chattanooga Lookouts tonight (Friday) salute nine area educators in the third annual Teachers’ Hall of Fame “Starting 9” recognition at AT&T Field.

The “Starting 9” program honors those educators who step up to the plate and make a difference in the lives of their students.

Tonight, the nine outstanding educators will receive all-star treatment. Each will receive four skybox tickets, a $500 personal check and the opportunity to throw the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game while donning a personalized Lookouts jersey.

Honorees include:

Lyn Simpson, 5th-grade teacher at Snow Hill Elementary
Shirley Ann McDonald, 6th-grade teacher at Ringgold Middle School
Richard Shaw, History teacher and coach at Cleveland High School
David Camp, 5th-grade teacher at Battlefield Elementary
Leigh Ann Burgess, 5th-grade teacher at Charleston Elementary
Jodi Crim, Business Technology teacher at Sequoyah High School
Theresa Custer, 5th-grade teacher at Clifton Hills Elementary
Lisa Steele, 2nd-grade teacher at Ooltewah Elementary
Ashleigh Swinford, 3rd-grade Chattanooga Valley Elementary

Unum invited principals from schools in Hamilton and surrounding counties to nominate a teacher from their school who has made an extraordinary difference in motivating students to raise performance levels. The winners were selected by a committee out of many outstanding nominees based on their creativity and innovation in the classroom.

“Unum is committed to making our community a better place, and one important way we can do that is by supporting public education,” said Bob Greving, chief financial officer for Unum. “We are proud to partner with the Lookouts to honor these teachers who work so hard to make a positive impact in the lives of our children.”

The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with the introduction of the “Starting 9” on AT&T field.
