Baylor's Late Goals Earn 2-0 Win At McCallie Teams Advance To Region Seeding Games Saturday posted May 8, 2008
The two teams had tied 0-0 in the match up just a few week ago. With just 11 minutes left in the game, Carter Paden converted a mis-cleared ball by McCallie after a Kelly Smith corner kick. McCallie pushed up in the final minutes and Baylor was able to make them pay as Sam Williams made a quick pass to Tanner Taylor who was able to sweep the ball past McCallie keeper Matt Higgins with just two minutes left in the game. Both teams had quality chances but not many. McCallie's Alex Crabtree had a shot go off the left post with just a few seconds left in the half. Baylor's Sam Williams had a one on one opportunity with Higgins but the experienced keeper was able to make the save. Baylor had several re-start chances in the last 20 minutes of the game including several corner kicks. McCallie head coach Tony Meyers said that may have been the difference. "We were pleased with how the boys played in the first half," Meyers said. "We gave them too many re-starts in the second half and you can't do that against a team like Baylor." Both teams will play on Saturday in seeding games for sub-state games next week. The loss for McCallie means, win or lose on Saturday, they will be traveling to Memphis next week for their sub-state game. "This game is always like this," Meyers said. "Both teams know what each wanted to do but I told the guys that they went out with 100% effort and that is all we can ask." Baylor beat Webb on Tuesday to advance to the championship game. Weekley said he was a little worried his team would have the legs to play this game just two days later. "With us playing on Tuesday I was worried about our legs," Weekley said. "McCallie is very athletic. We changed our formation in the second half thinking we could do a better job of keeping possession of the ball. Danny had another solid game in the goal for us." The senior keeper earned his 12th shutout of the year and has allowed just two goals this season. It was the first loss for McCallie this year. McCallie and Baylor will play either Father Ryan or Pope John Paul II on Saturday at Baylor. |
