Students March For Parks At Chickamauga Battlefield posted May 8, 2008
March for Parks is a nationwide initiative to promote public support for preservation of national, state, and local parks. West Side and Graysville schools are both partners with Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Catoosa County’s Partnership 2000 program. The two schools hold annual “March for Parks” events to provide students with the opportunity to make a positive impact in the local community. Before they walk, students collect donations that are given to the park specifically to help recast missing or broken historical tablets. These interpretive tablets help visitors from all over the country learn more about the Civil War battles that were fought at Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Jim Szyjkowski, the park’s resource manager, has been amazed at the longevity of this program. Mr. Szyjkowski reported that since 1998, this National Military Park has recast 16 interpretive tablets, which could not have been done without the help of the partnership schools. To learn more about March for Parks, contact one of the participating schools or call Jim Szyjkowski at (706) 866-9241. |
