The Brutal Side Of Horse Racing posted May 6, 2008 We see once again a beautiful horse had to be killed because of breaking both of her front ankles. This is not only sad, it is downright brutal. We need to start asking why so many horses are being forced to race at such a young age. And why this form of animal cruelty isn't looked at as the same as dog fighting? We'll hear how the owners really love their horses. But the sad fact remains that most of these beloved horses will end up in slaughter, or discarded any way their owners see fit, as long as that horse no longer can make a profit, it has no worth. Eight Belles ran her best and came in second, and was then killed. She suffered so badly that she didn't have a front leg to stand on. They hauled her off in the ambulance and she was immediately killed. How sad for this beauty who had worked so long and hard to end up this way. We did see when this little beauty Eight Belles broke both of her front ankles, they were very quick to kill her, at least get her out of her pain. That is love. It is sad to see such a beautiful animal as Eight Belles be forced to race and go through what must have been hellish pain upon breaking her ankles. This is not the first time a horse has been killed because of injuries suffered while racing. It has happen several times. It is either hidden from the crowds that go to bet on these horses, never once thinking about what these horses are forced into, or they simply don't care. Dr. Larry Bramlage who described the sickening image of what happened to Eight Belles was quoted as saying when asked about fillies racing against colts, he said, 'One death is not an epidemic.' But it isn't just one death, there have been more, and there will continue to be more as long as these horses are not protected. This sport isn't about the one death, it is about the sport that grinds up young horses, and when they end up dead, everyone just believes this is the way it is. Once again an animal being used for some sport just to entertain us. This is just crazy and without any concern for these beautiful creatures. It is time for us to stop looking at animals as just a money making machine. They are living, breathing creatures who have rights to live on this earth, the same as man. Elizabeth Ferrari |
