Chattanooga A Possibility For Volkswagen Plant List Is Narrowed To Alabama, Michigan, Tennessee posted April 23, 2008 Chattanooga, which narrowly lost a bid for a Toyota plant, could be a possibility for a Volkswagen facility. Volkswagen AG officials said Wednesday the short list for a possible new U.S. plant has been cut to Alabama, Michigan and Tennessee. Sources said local officials have been in talks with a German automaker. Stefan Jacoby, president and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, said, “Our evaluation of a potential U.S. production facility continues, and we must focus more narrowly on just those few states that best meet our particular needs. “We reviewed many excellent sites and the process to narrow down the locations was not an easy one. We look forward to continuing to work with the states of Alabama, Michigan, and Tennessee as the evaluation moves forward.” He said the company will not comment further on the selection process until it is prepared to announce its final decision about U.S. production and, if so, where. That announcement is expected this summer. Volkswagen AG, a German automobile manufacturing group, is the fourth largest automobile maker in the world and the largest in Europe. Chattanooga has been touting its Enterprise South Industrial Park as a prime location for a facility such as an automobile plant. In contrast to most automakers, Volkswagen said first quarter operating profit rose nearly 21 percent to 1.31 billion euros. Volkswagen reported record sales for most of its economy-size models. |
