The Chattanooga History Center is reported an excellent performance by several local youngsters in the 2008 Tennessee History Day held in Memphis.
The local entrants qualified for the state competition by placing in first, second or third place in the Southeastern Tennessee Region History Day hosted on March 1 by the Center.
Students competed for awards in exhibit, documentary, essay, website and performance categories.
Those taking first or second places at the state level are eligible to compete in the national competition to be held at the University of Maryland in College Park.
State winners from the Southeastern region are:
Individual Documentary, Junior Division
1st Place – Vivian Hughbanks, Stone House School, “War in the Friendly City”
Individual Documentary, Senior Division
1st Place – Cody Brown, Polk County High School, “A Conflict Through Crosshairs: The Snipers of Stalingrad”
Group Documentary, Senior Division
1st Place – Matthew VanDevander and Nicholas Ramsey, Polk County High School, “Complacency, Corruption, or Conflict: The GI Rebellion of 1946”
Individual Exhibit, Senior Division
1st Place – Grace Hughbanks, Stone House School, “Red Tail Angels: How the Tuskeegee Airmen Desegregated the U. S. Armed Forces”
2nd Place – Caitlyn Sudcamp, Home Schooled, “The Missiles of October”
Group Performance, Senior Division
1st Place – Markcus Kitchens, John Rivers, Jacquelyn Benford and Manish Jethva, Tyner Academy, “The Howard High Sit-ins”
1st Place – Gary Moats, Tim Edgemon and Anthony Joslin, Polk County High School, “TVA: Man vs Government vs Nature
