Chattanooga Fire Marshall J. Craig Haney and Assistant Fire Marshall David L. Brooks Jr. testified before the Industrial Impact Subcommittee of the Commerce Committee at the request of Rep. JoAnne Favors.

The testimony was in regards to HB 2528 by Michael Turner, Democrat of Davidson County, which would require all statutorily-mandated smoke detectors installed after Jan. 1, 2009 to be photo-electric devices instead of ionization devices.

Fire Marshall Haney told the committee that it would be difficult to prevent Chattanooga homebuilders or home owners from purchasing ionization devices in Georgia if this law is enacted.

An amendment was offered by Rep. Curry Todd, Republican of Shelby County, that the law would require a combination or one of each.

Both Chattanooga firefighters indicated that this amendment would be acceptable.

The bill is to be heard next Wednesday for final action in this subcommittee.
