Gov. Phil Bredesen will honor one of Chattanooga's finest with the Honorary Tennessean Awards Thursday at the Chattanooga Police Department. Assistant Chief Mike Williams has been recognized for his career achievements and dedication to law enforcement.

Assistant Chief Williams has been in law enforcement for more than 25 years. He gained credibility as a trainer early in his career after developing the Chattanooga SWAT Team to a level that's received regional and national recognition. In addition to his training and development of tactical teams he has also provided training to adjoining counties in other areas of law enforcement and investigation. By far one of his greatest achievements has been his method of rapid deployment for response to active shooter situations, especially in schools, officials said.

Assistant Chief Williams has traveled across the country teaching methods for rapid deployment and other skills for saving lives. He is recognized by all who know him as an ally, a teacher, a friend and a valuable resource when all goes wrong. His dedication to improve law enforcement skills and tactics has been the cornerstone of his career and continues to be the driving force in his current position at the Chattanooga Police Department, officials said.

Richard Taylor will present the award to Assistant Chief Williams at the Chattanooga Police Department in the Community Room at 10 a.m.
