Cab Driver Killed In St. Elmo On Sunday Night posted March 17, 2008 A taxi driver was killed in St. Elmo on Sunday night in an apparent attempted robbery. The victim was identified as James Fleming Jr., 53. Police said Mr. Fleming was dropping off a passenger at 1405 West 44th St. when the passenger pulled a pistol and demanded money from him. When Mr. Fleming refused and tried to drive off, the passenger fired two shots into the cab and ran from the area. The cab went a short distance after striking a parked car and came to rest after hitting a garage. Police found the victim fatally wounded from the gunshot. The gunman was described as a young black male around 17-18 wearing a do-rag. It happened around 9:45 p.m. near Virginia Avenue.
