The Chattanooga Market will not be opening for a seventh year.
Owners Nick and Elizabeth Jessen said, "On April 7, 2002, we set out on an adventure to create a great open air market in Chattanooga. Six years and over 200 markets later, we have found ourselves having to make the tough decision to shut down the operation of the Chattanooga Market.
"Our passion to see a world class Market in our city has not diminished and we have always hoped that the concept would not only survive but thrive beyond our involvement. We have struggled from the beginning to make the concept work financially while waiting for the very slow, but steady growth to reach sustainability and a reasonable amount of profitability.
"Despite the incredible support of the Lyndhurst Foundation and the River City Company, we have simply fallen short.
"We still believe strongly in the concept of buying local and we appreciate the support we have received from our consumer base. Through 20 degree weather in December and 100 degree weather in August, we have seen a loyal group of customers who value the personal interaction that only a producer's market can provide.
"Over the years, we have met so many wonderful people and forged some valuable friendships with our customers, our vendors, and our partners. Our children's early years have been immersed with Sundays at the Market and all the fantastic experiences it has brought to our family. By helping to build our local food shed and supporting the arts, we are very proud of what we have accomplished together, but feel that it is time to pursue other opportunities for ourselves and our family.
