Backup quarterback Alex Good led Division II Carson-Newman to a 29-17 upset of the UTC Mocs at Finley Stadium on Thursday night.
The Mocs led 14-0 in their season opener, but the tide turned when Antonio Miller threw an interception and was injured on the play early in the second half.
UTC led 14-3 at the half, but the interception by All-American Eric Rice led to a second Eagle field goal, making it 14-6. Miller had his right leg pinned under him in making the tackle on the interception.
He saw limited action the rest of the way, and freshman Cody Romans stalled out on several offensive tries. Tony Pastore, the transfer from Kent State, finished out the game at quarterback after Romans was leveled by a Carson-Newman lineman.
Still ahead 14-6 in front of the crowd of 7,544, the Mocs went for it on a fourth and one but were stopped. Otis Miller then grabbed a pass across the middle and raced to within inches of the goal.
Good took it in, but Carson-Newman was penalized for an illegal shift. Buck Wakefield then ran it in on the next play. Carson-Newman tried for two, but failed. UTC was still up 14-12.
A Carson-Newman field goal gave the Eagles their first lead at 15-14. They were back in business after a punt return to the Moc 28. A pass to the tight end put Carson-Newman up 22-14.
Pastore got the call and rifled a long pass that fell off the fingertips of former Coosa High star Blue Cooper. UTC's Craig Camay connected on a 47-yard field goal to close to 22-17.
But Carson-Newman marched 63 yards on seven plays to put it out of reach.
In the first half, Miller ran for two touchdowns to lead Mocs to their halftime lead.
Miller took it up the middle for a score early in the second quarter after neither team could get any points in the opening quarter.
The Mocs quickly got the ball back, and Miller again ran it in. The Mocs led 14-0.
Chattanooga native Reggie Hubbard had a circus catch on a 50-yard play to put the Eagles on the Mocs' 12-yard line. But Carson-Newman had to settle for a field goal try, and it was wide right.
Carson-Newman threatened again after a 26-yard screen pass. This time the field goal was good from 27 yards out. That score came with just 27 seconds left in the half.
UTC tried a hail Mary pass into the end zone at the end of the half, but it was batted down at the one-yard line.
Former Tennessee player James Banks was mainly held in check by UTC.
It was the first time the two teams had met in almost a century.
