Loftis Drops Out Of State Senate Race
posted July 20, 2007

Former County School Supt. Dr. Don Loftis has dropped out of the race for state Senate, County Commission members said.

Dr. Loftis is involved in taking care of his elderly father and he also wants to continue enjoying his retirement, one commissioner said.

Dr. Loftis earlier had expressed an interest in the seat being vacated by Sen. Ward Crutchfield after pleading guilty to federal bribery charges.

If the appointment had been by the County Commission, Dr. Loftis was expected to have gotten the nod.

However, Sen. Crutchfield is expected to resign early next month, setting up a special election for the post.

Dr. Loftis has worked recently as a lobbyist for the county, spending much time in Nashville working with legislators and the governor's office.

He helped secure additional millions for the county schools with a new BEP formula.
