Mayors Seek To Keep TVA Downtown
Agency Studying Option Of Building Office Near Chickamauga Dam
posted April 26, 2007

Mayor Ron Littlefield and County Mayor Claude Ramsey flew to Chicago Thursday as part of an effort to try to keep the Tennessee Valley Authority headquarters downtown.

TVA's lease expires in two years, and the agency is seeking reduced rent.

Mayor Littlefield and County Mayor Ramsey, along with Trevor Hamilton of the Chamber of Commerce and businessman Jon Kinsey met with officials of Chattanooga Valley Associates - owners of the building.

Mayor Littlefield said, "We would certainly like to keep TVA downtown. We are encouraging both sides to work toward that end. We made some progress, but there is a long way to go."

The mayor said it was pointed out that BlueCross is vacating a huge amount of downtown space.

Mayor Littlefield noted that the building occupied by TVA was designed to meet the agency's need and would be a difficult fit for another tenant.

Mayor Littlefield noted he was involved at the time TVA first took the lease.

TVA is also studying the possibility of building new office space on land it owns near Chickamauga Dam.

Mayor Littlefield said, "We are offering all the encouragement we can for them to stay downtown."
