Lee University’s Dr. Joong Han (Jonathan) Jung, assistant professor of piano, and Dr. Joohae Kim, piano instructor, will present a recital on Tuesday performing works by Mozart, Camille Saint-Saens, F. Shubert, and M. Ravel.
South Korean-New Zealand pianist Dr. Jung concertizes regularly across the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. He has performed with the Eastman Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean Philharmonic Orchestra of New Zealand, University of Auckland Symphony Orchestra, and Auckland Youth Orchestra.
The New York Concert Review referred to Dr. Jung’s playing as “virtuosic” and “truly moving.” As a composer, Dr. Jung has premiered and performed his own compositions at Carnegie Hall, University of Southern Mississippi, Tulane University, Hatch Recital Hall, and Brevard Music Center.
Dr. Jung received prizes in the Kerikeri Piano Competition, Eastman Concerto Competition, Kapiti Coast National Piano Competition, and the Christchurch National Piano Concerto Competition. His solo recitals and concerto performances have been recorded and broadcasted by Radio New Zealand and World TV.
Dr. Jung joined the faculty of the Lee University School of Music in 2017 as an assistant professor of piano. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts, Master of Arts in theory pedagogy, and Master of Music from Eastman School of Music and his bachelor’s degree from University of Auckland.
Born in South Korea, New Zealand pianist Dr. Kim began learning the piano at the age of three. In 2008, she received an invitation to study at Florida State University, where she later earned a Doctor of Music in piano performance.
Dr. Kim’s performances have earned numerous prizes in major piano competitions, including the Kerikeri Piano Competition, Kapiti Coast National Piano Competition, and the Christchurch National Piano Concerto Competition. She was awarded the University of Auckland Blues Award for achievement in music in piano performance and was also a recipient of the Miss Willa Chapman Award from the Rotary Club of Tallahassee.
She has collaborated with renowned artists and orchestras, including Michael Strauss, Jesús Castro-Balbi, Magnolia Chamber Orchestra, and Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. She was invited as a collaborative guest artist in Whitehead Hall, Valdosta State University, and Southeastern Louisiana University. Dr. Kim recently joined the faculty of Lee’s School of Music to teach applied piano and class piano sequences and to continue performing as a solo/collaborative artist.
The concert will be held in Squires Recital Hall on Lee’s campus and will begin at 7:30 p.m.
