Gerald McCormick: Setting The Record Straight - And Response

  • Friday, September 14, 2018

Although it is tempting to ignore dishonest political attacks and simply let them evaporate with the next new story line, sometimes it is appropriate to set the record straight when political activists push it too far. I have read with great interest over the last few months as my integrity has been questioned by local wannabe politicians and a hapless state Democratic Party. They have tried to create a fake scandal and have been fairly inept every step of the way.

It started with the publication of an anonymous claim that I did not actually live in my district in Chattanooga.

This anonymous accuser, who was working on a campaign for someone who was running as a Democrat for the House seat I currently occupy, admitted to sneaking into my backyard to investigate himself! I immediately gathered proof through financial receipts and records of public events attended that this charge was ludicrous. The proof was shared with the proper authorities and the matter was settled.

Soon after this the State Democratic Party, who had apparently hired an “opposition research firm”, claimed that I had falsely signed a loan document for a home my wife, who works in Nashville, and I purchased last year after paying rent for my previous 13 years in the legislature in Nashville. The mortgage company saw it differently from these political opponents and that matter also went nowhere.

As all this was going on I got a job offer that would require me to spend most of my time in Nashville and resign my seat in the House of Representatives. I accepted the offer. This occurred after the filing deadline and the ballot was reopened for new candidates to enter the race. The State Democratic Party sued to prevent another Republican from being on the ballot. Three different courts have dismissed their frivolous attempt to disenfranchise voters in the District.

Anyone who knows me dismisses these unfounded accusations but I wanted to once more clarify the events for the record.

* * *

I remember when a young real estate professional Gerald McCormick ran for office. Seems like yesterday.

I knew your aunt, who was a political activist on a much smaller scale decades ago. I respected her ways of holding a certain rogue and out of control local government accountable.

I admired your work as a professional, and your accomplishments in Nashville would fill so many pages.  With your real estate and project background, you will be a huge success in your new career.  Engineers will love working with you with that project background.

What I enjoyed about you as part of our state delegation was how accessible you were.  Regular people like me could telephone you about legislation that was concerning. I contacted you many times over the years, or bothered you continuously, however you wish to view it, about children’s legislation and other bills, and you were always responsive.  You would give anyone time, regardless of party affiliation. That is a fact.

Rep. McCormick you have represented us well beyond District 26 in the Tennessee House with integrity and honor every day.  Your integrity remains top notch with the people that know you and you would win today if you ran.

You mention the liberal ilk. I would expect nothing less from the liberal bias and those that trespass in yards to write pure lies about Christian conservatives and Republicans.  Sadly, the liberals have a party agenda.  The majority ignore their lies. That is why the state of Tennessee is majority Republican, the people simply ignore the seek-and-destroy liberals. It is a credibility problem for them. No big deal for conservatives and Republicans, they just move forward.

Thank you for your service, I will miss the security of knowing you had Hamilton County’s back.  I believe you have been a gentleman and served with great integrity during your tours of duty.

You sure would make a great Mayor if you return to Hamilton County.

Like my Dad always told me, “nothing ventured, nothing gained,”  go create that chapter called success volume II.
