Volleyball Roundup: Sale Creek Races Past Cleveland, 3-1

East Hamilton, Ooltewah, Boyd-Buchanan Lookout Valley, Notre Dame Also Win

Sale Creek and Cleveland, both of which earned state tournament appearances in 2017, squared off Thursday night in high school volleyball action at Sale Creek.

The Lady Panthers, opening their 2018 scheduled, came away with a 3-1 win over the Lady Blue Raiders with set scores of 25-22, 25-15, 17-25 and 25-22.

Madysun Steele had 16 kills, 12 digs, four blocks and two aces to pace the Lady Panthers.

Jayda Perry recorded 37 assists, nine digs, one ace and one kill while Avery Cox added 19 digs, two aces, one kill and two assists.

East Hamilton got a strong 1-2 effort from the Hayes sisters and knocked off East Ridge, 3-0, at East Hamilton.

Madison and McKenna Hayes combined for 10 kills, 10 digs and three aces as the Lady Hurricanes improved to 2-1 in early season play. East Hamilton’s lone loss was to Baylor.

Hillary English supplied five aces and 15 assists for East Hamilton, which dominated the match with set scores of 25-5, 25-6 and 25-3.

Ooltewah remained unbeaten and opened its District 5-3A schedule with a 3-0 victory over visiting McMinn County. Set scores were 25-19, 25-17 and 25-21.

Senior Cheyanne Sales recorded 13 kills, two blocks, two digs and one ace in leading the Lady Owls (3-0, 1-0).

Madalyn Mills, another senior, had five kills, 12 assists, 15 digs and one ace while sophomore Alyssa White added three kills, nine assists, five digs and three aces.

Boyd-Buchanan swept Red Bank, 3-0, at Red Bank and the Lady Lions fell to 1-3 on the season. Red Bank’s Shelby Romans and Ashley Ware combined for seven kills.

Soddy-Daisy traveled to Cookeville for a tough District 6-3A contest and the Lady Trojans battled the Lady Cavaliers before falling, 3-2. Set scores were 25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 14-25 and 10-15.

Hannah Rogers had one kill, 28 assists, a half block, five digs and two aces for the Lady Trojans. Sierrah Lemons added 14 kills, 2.5 blocks and one ace while her sister, Caroline, contributed six kills and two blocks.

Lookout Valley got a combined 36 digs from Savannah Rains and Amber Walliser as the Lady Yellow Jackets swept Richard Hardy, 3-0. Rains also added 13 kills and one block while Walliser had five aces, six kills and one block.

Rylee Morton turned in 30 assists and Josse Reed had a solid stat line with four aces, three kills, four blocks and four digs.

Notre Dame improved to 2-0 by beating Hixson, 3-1, by set scores of 25-20, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-21.

Mackenzie Johnson led the Lady Irish with 14 kills, four blocks and one ace while McKenna Brown had seven kills, 14 digs and three aces. Jazzyme Watkins added 7 kills, 15 digs and one-half block.

Sarah Desai and Mary Fillauer combined for 37 assists and Ally Mildenberg contributed a team-high 26 digs to go along with five aces, two assists and one kill for the Lady Irish, which trailed by at least four points in all five sets, but still pulled out the win.
