Thomas West in the role of Bill in A Quiet Place
Baritone Thomas West, a recent Juilliard graduate and Chattanooga native who is currently studying at the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Mass., sang the role of Bill in Leonard Berstein's opera A Quiet Place Thursday.
The TMC is the world-renowned summer music academy of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, for which over 100 students from across the country are selected to participate in a rigorous schedule of performances and masterclasses.
In addition to recently graduating from Juilliard, Mr. West is the founder of ReGenerate, an arts leadership program for high school students in Chattanooga. He is also the founder and CEO of ‘Collaborative Arts Ensemble,’ a collective of artists that create concert programs designed to promote social understanding in the world.
Mr. West has already showcased his vocal talent here at Tanglewood this summer. On July 2, he performed Bach’s Cantata No. 159 “Seht, wir gehn hinauf gen Jerusalem,” and Cantata No. 109 “Ich glaube, lieber Herr.” He closed-out July by performing in a TMC Vocal Concert that showcased French artsong.
The TMC is staging the opera as part of their summer long celebration of the centennial of Bernstein’s birth.
Mr. West will close his Tanglewood season with a performance of Harbison’s Flashes and Illuminations (1, 2, 3) on Aug. 14.
