The 18th annual Honey Harvest, Creative Discovery Museum’s sweetest event, returns Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29, from noon to 4 p.m. The Museum will be buzzing with beekeepers and guests celebrating the work and life of the honey bee.
Honey Harvest, the only event of its kind in Chattanooga, is a Museum-wide celebration with regional beekeepers who help guests learn about the importance of honey bees and how honey is made.
During the celebration, guests can: make their own honey lip balm, beeswax candle and honey soap to take home; taste different varieties of honey in Culinary Corner; and participate in honey extraction and meet beekeepers.
“There’s nothing like hearing the busy buzz of honey bees at work in their hive,” said Karen Dewhirst, Creative Discovery Museum’s science manager. “The entire Museum comes to life with hundreds of families happily exploring the world of honey bees.”
The Museum will once again host a Welsh Honey and Hive product show that will take place in the Discovery Library room during both days of the event. Guests will view prize winning honey, honey related products and also be able to purchase products made by regional beekeepers and their bees.
Children can submit their own works of bee art to the Welsh Honey and Hive product show. Submissions must be 2D only and 8.5” by 11” or smaller. Organizations participating in this year’s Honey Harvest include the Chattanooga Beekeepers Association, Chattooga County Beekeepers Association, Cherokee Beekeepers Association, Highland Rim Beekeepers Association, Ocoee Beekeepers Association, Tennessee Valley Beekeepers Association and Tri-State Beekeepers Association.
Honey bees have long been a part of the Museum’s exhibits. The Museum’s Buzz Alley exhibit opened in 2011 as a permanent exhibit that showcases the honey bee as a pollinator. Buzz Alley also highlights the relationship between bees and wildflowers and the importance of beekeeping to help sustain a healthy ecosystem.
