Fred N. Carter, Jr. ,79, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2018.  

He was born in Chattanooga on March 29, 1939, to Fred N. Carter, Sr. and Mary Seward Carter.  Fred was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, a graduate of Chattanooga City High School, class of 1957 and a graduate of the University of Chattanooga.  While attending City High School, he was an all state basketball player in 1957 and continued his sports career in basketball at the university.  He later was inducted into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame. Until his physical challenges prevented his participation, he was an active member of the selection committee of the Sports Hall of Fame.  He was also a lifetime member of the YMCA.

Fred was preceded in death by his mother and father.  

He is survived by his brothers, Charlie (Wilma) Carter and Tom Carter; nephews, Chuck, Chris Chad Jeff and Tim Carter and step-children, Leigh Anne Loggins, Chris Dobbins and Kelly Dobbins. 

He was a Christian and an active member of Brainerd Hills Presbyterian Church.

The family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the excellent care given by Standifer Place and Hospice of Chattanooga.

A Celebration of Fred’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Roop officiating.  

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Friday and from 12–3 p.m. on Saturday at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 7414 Old Lee Highway, Chattanooga, Tn. 37421.
