Alexander Supports Trump Administration Association Health Plan Rule

  • Thursday, June 21, 2018

Senator Lamar Alexander spoke about a new rule the Trump Administration released this week that could allow a self-employed Tennessee plumber or farmer or employee of a small business to buy lower cost employer health insurance that will include the same protections, such as coverage for pre-existing conditions, that employees of large companies have.

He said, "This week, President Trump and his labor secretary announced an opportunity that should help millions of Americans buy lower cost health insurance.

Specifically, if you're a self-employed Tennessean, say, a contractor making $60,000 or $70,000 and paying $15,000 or $20,000 for your insurance, or if you work for a small business, this will allow you to buy the same kind of employer insurance that employees of large companies already can buy. That insurance has a lower cost -- it's usually several thousand dollars cheaper. It has the same kind of patient protections, such as protection for people who have preexisting health conditions and are trying to buy insurance. It's called the association health plans [rule]. This new proposal does not have to go through Congress – it’s a rule by the U.S. Department of Labor. And I'm hopeful that it will finally give some help to thousands of Tennesseans who've seen Obamacare premiums skyrocket over the last six years.”
