Kathy Long
Kathy Lynne Barton Long, 68, of Ooltewah, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2018.
Kathy was born on Jan. 9, 1950, to the late Leo and Floetta Barton. She was preceded in death by her brother, Gary Barton.
She was a faithful member of East Brainerd Church of Christ.
Kathy had a bachelor’s degree in history from Harding University and two master’s degrees in history and geography from Florida State University. She went on to teach at Central High School and Vashti Industrial School for Girls in Thomasville, Ga., and retired after 27 years as a professor at Chattanooga State Community College.
Kathy was a life-long learner and loved teaching students. Besides teaching, she loved gardening with her dog Millie by her side. She also loved to travel. Her favorite trips were to Europe with her students from Chattanooga State.
Survivors include her daughter, Kelli (Brad) McCormick of Chattanooga, Tennessee, nieces, Mary Prickett from Athens, Georgia and Caroline Schmidt from Boston, Massachusetts, sister-in-law, Gloria Barton of Athens, Georgia and dog, Millie.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Central Time on Saturday, May 12, at Lynn Cemetery in Lynn, Al.
