Chemical Engineer Helped Build And Design Nuclear Submarines

Peter Dean Arrowsmith died on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Alexian Village.

He was born Sept. 29, 1934, in Kansas City, Ks. He graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1952 and the University of Kansas in 1956 with highest honors in Chemical Engineering. Following graduation, he was commissioned into the Navy Nuclear Submarine Program and was selected to study at the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology. There he met his future wife, Mary Margaret "Peggy" Riney. They were married on May 3, 1958, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Knoxville.

Early in their marriage, they lived in several locations before settling in Mystic, Ct., where their son Tom was born. In Connecticut, Peter worked for Admiral Hyman Rickover designing and building nuclear submarines. In 1963, he left the Navy, and they relocated to Bethesda, Md., where they lived for three decades and where their sons Ted and Peter were born. He began work at Nuclear Utilities Services (NUS), a Nuclear and Environmental Engineering Consulting firm, where he became CEO and chairman. Following retirement, Peggy and Peter moved to Savannah, Ga., where they lived at The Landings on Skidaway Island.

In 2009, they moved to Alexian Village on Signal Mountain. There he was active in volunteer work for the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and in various governance roles at Alexian Village. He was a mainstay at his grandchildren's sporting and musical events and was a fun-loving presence in all of their lives. He was an avid bridge player, painter, and golfer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell C. Arrowsmith and his wife of 55 years, Peggy; brothers-in-law John M Riney, Jr. and Thomas B. Green, sisters-in-law Sister Mary Elizabeth Riney, RSM, and Mildred Lee Riney.

He is survived by his son, Thomas, his wife Monica, and their children, Cris and Laney of Sacramento, Ca.; his son, Edward, his wife Amy, and their children, George, Mary Margaret, John, and Teddy of Flintstone; his son, Peter, his wife Sepi, and their children, Nicholas, Ryan, and Sophie of La Jolla, California; his sisters-in-law, Patricia R. Green of Nashville and Crueza P. Riney of Rio de Janiero, Brazil; a cousin, Arthur Fisk of Sandy Springs, Ga., and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Alexian Village Chapel at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 5.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alexian Village Scholarship Fund.
