For the first time in over two years, the Covenant women's tennis team suffered a conference regular season loss. The Lady Scots saw their 19-match win streak in regular season USA South matches come to an end with a 7-2 loss to visiting Piedmont on Friday evening at the Covenant Tennis Complex.
Covenant (6-6, 2-1 USA South) had not lost a regular season conference contest since Feb. 27, 2016 at Methodist. In the time since, the Lady Scots won 19 straight matches, including an undefeated run through league play last year.
Piedmont (8-2, 5-0 USA South) used a sweep in doubles play to propel them to a match victory. Despite all three matches being tight at times, Piedmont was able to take a 3-0 match lead after the doubles portion. Aly Hall and Jennie Spielman were the closest match, but fell 8-6 at the No. 2 spot to Piedmont's Caroline Connelly and Maggie Moody.
In singles play, Hall was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at the top spot over Morgan Buchholz to keep Covenant in the match. Covenant's other point in the contest came at the No. 4 spot as Spielman took down Moody 6-1, 6-4.
One singles match went three sets as Connelly bested Annie DeLuca 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. Mackenzie Jones and Esther Eddy also suffered narrow defeats in their contests, as Jones fell 6-3, 6-4 to Kara Landsiedel at the fifth position while Eddy lost to Megan Waldheim 6-2, 6-4.
Covenant will host Brevard on Saturday. The match has been moved to the indoor courts at Baylor School in Chattanooga and will now start at 12 p.m.
