Walter Hensley, 77, of Decatur, passed away March 19, 2018 at his home surrounded by family.

He was born in Madison County, N.C. and had been a resident of Decatur for the past 22 years coming from Etowah. He was the son of the late John and Delsie Hensley. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur. 

Mr. Hensley was preceded in death by his first wife, Allie Marie Hensley; a son, Walter Willard Hensley; a sister, Eleanor Arrowood; two brothers, Charles Hensley and Jarvis Hensley; and a stepdaughter, Sherri Edwards. 

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 22 years, Elaine “Sissy” Adcock Hensley of Decatur; two daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Steve Byrum of Athens and Teresa and Rick Barham of Riceville; Three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Tonya Pendergrass of Athens, John and Heidi Hensley of Etowah, and Nick and Tracie Hensley of England; a stepson, Eddie Jewell of Decatur; a sister, Rouchell Norton; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; and many nieces and nephews. 

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, at Bowers Funeral Home. The funeral will follow the visitation with Rev. Jamey Davis and Dr. Jim McCarter officiating. Interment with military honors will be Thursday, March 22, at 11 a.m. in Decatur Cemetery.
