George Singleton
Southern Lit Alliance is welcoming author George Singleton as part of the South Bound lecture series for an evening reading of his new collection of short stories, Calloustown. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 4, at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a discussion and book signing with the author.
The event will be held at the Arts Building at 301 East 11th St. in downtown Chattanooga and is being hosted by the Writers@Work program at Chattanooga State.
About George Singleton:
George Singleton was born in Anaheim, Ca., but raised in Greenwood, S.C., thereby qualifying him for inclusion in the hallowed halls of the southern writer. He has written seven collections of short stories, three novels, and an instructional book on writing fiction. He graduated from Furman University in 1980 and received his MFA from UNC, Greensboro shortly thereafter. He was inducted into the Fellowship of Southern Writers in April of 2015 after accepting the Cobb Endowed Chair in the Humanities at Wofford College where he currently teaches.
His works have appeared in many magazines including The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s Magazine, Playboy, Oxford American, and The Southern Review.
Mr. Singleton shares that he grew up wanting to be a track coach, but a college injury changed that trajectory. After some interest in law, he decided to pursue his love of writing that had appeared in his late teens. His writing has led to a number of awards and accolades including a finalist for the 2013 SIBA Book Awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Hillsdale Award for Fiction from the Fellowship of Southern Writers.
Calloustown, the seventh collection from master raconteur George Singleton, who's been praised by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as the unchallenged “king of the comic Southern short story,” finds the author at the absolute top of his game as he traces the unlikely inhabitants of the titular Calloustown in all their humanity. Whether exploring family, religion, politics or the true meaning of home, these stories range from deeply affecting to wildly absurd and back again, all in the blink of an eye.
