University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Bryce Carr is on to tonight's blood round at the NCAA Championships. He scored two wins in consolation action and is one victory away from All-American honors.
Carr, the No. 12 seed at 184 pounds, advanced in the early round consolations with a 3-1 win over Wisconsin's Ricky Robertson. Carr was in on a single-leg twice during regulation, but the 11th-seeded Robertson fought off both shots. Carr's third try was the winner, taking down Robertson in the first sudden victory of overtime.
His second match was against Rutgers' Nick Gravina, the 14th seed in the tournament. Carr lost to Gravina by giving up a fall in the second sudden victory of overtime at this same point of last year's NCAA Championships.
Carr went up 2-1 with a takedown in the first period. He extended that lead to 4-2 with another takedown in the second, adding a reversal and riding time in the final frame.
Carr is the first Moc in the blood round since Sean Boyle at 125 in 2015. UTC's last All-American was Cody Cleveland who finished eighth at 141 in 2008.
Carr is set to face Cornell's Max Dean, the No.
9 seed at 184. Tonight's session starts at 8:00 p.m. (E.D.T.).
