Witness Says Martin Began Firing Shots Outside Coyote Jack's Saloon Prior To Sharone Porter Being Killed

  • Tuesday, February 20, 2018

A witness testified Tuesday that Roddarius L. Martin began firing shots at her and others outside Coyote Jack's Saloon in a Dec. 17 incident that left Sharone Porter lying dead.

The female witness said she dated Martin in high school, but was the girlfriend of the victim's brother, Torrie Porter, at the time of the early morning incident in a Cowart Street parking lot.

General Sessions Court Judge Clarence Shattuck bound charges of criminal homicide and attempted murder to the Grand Jury against Martin.

He left the bond the same for Martin on the murder despite a request by defense attorney Bill Speek that it be lowered to $100,000.

Attorney Speek said there may have been a second shooter. He said no one testified of seeing Martin shoot at Sharone Porter, and he said 9 mm shell casings from different manufacturers were found in the parking lot.

The witness said she and Torrie Porter were arguing that night and he was angry. She said he was upset that Martin was staring at them as they drank inside the club.

Under cross-examination, she said she had corresponded with Martin via Facebook since her high school days.

Prosecutor Kevin Brown called it "a shooting over a woman, not gangs." The defense objected to testimony that Torrie Porter was an associate of the Gangster Disciples.

It was testified that Torrie Porter is currently in jail in Georgia.

The witness said Martin and Sharone Porter had gone to school together and they appeared friendly to one another when they entered the bar.

She said there was an argument with Martin's group - mainly from Torrie Porter. She said it spilled over into the parking lot.

The witness said she went to her car to leave, but decided to go back to try to pull Torrie Porter from the scene.

She said Torrie Porter was arguing with someone else when Martin suddenly appeared and fired several shots in the air. She said she and others began running. She said Torrie Porter was shot in the knee.

She went back looking for Sharone Porter and found he had been shot in the chest. She said he was "breathing a little bit" when she got to him.

Detective Zack Crawford said eight 9 mm shells were found on the parking lot. He said Martin was stopped 17 days earlier and found in possession of a 9 mm handgun registered to someone else.

He said it is not uncommon to find bullets from different manufacturer's in a gun.

The murder weapon has not been recovered.

The detective said some of the initial argument was caught on video, but not the actual shooting.

He said he was working another incident in North Chattanooga when he heard the shots.
