Sandbox Percussion

String Theory, in partnership with Lee University and the Hunter Museum of American Art, will continue its 10th anniversary season with a week of outreach and performances with the award-winning quartet Sandbox Percussion.

Review for Sandbox Percussion:

Lauded by The Washington Post as “revitalizing the world of contemporary music” with “jaw- dropping virtuosity,” Sandbox Percussion has established itself as a leading proponent in this generation of contemporary percussion chamber music. Through compelling collaborations with composers and performers, the ensemble captivates audiences with performances that are both visually and aurally stunning.

Brought together by their love of chamber music and the simple joy of playing together, quartet members Jonathan Allen, Victor Caccese, Ian Rosenbaum, and Terry Sweeney seek to engage a wider audience for classical music.

The quartet will perform Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Hunter Museum, presenting works by Bach, Reich, Akiho, and Crowell, along with a piece by Mr. Caccese.

Prior to the concert, Musical Dialogue will take place at 5:30 p.m. with Performance Today’s Fred Child, featuring in-depth conversations with the artists on their lives, inspirations, and the masterpieces being performed that evening.

In addition to hosting Performance Today, Child is a commentator and announcer for Live from Lincoln Center and co-host of Carnegie Hall Live, an annual series of a dozen live national radio broadcasts from America’s premier musical venue. He has given concert talks for Lincoln Center, the Aspen Festival, Summerfest La Jolla, and many other venues across the country.

Following the Tuesday evening mainstage performance, Sandbox Percussion’s residency will culminate in a performance of the groundbreaking work “Inuksuit” by the Pulitzer-winning composer John Luther Adams. Described by the New York Times as “the ultimate environmental piece,” this outdoor concert experience will take place on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m. at Coolidge Park with musicians performing throughout the park.

This event will be preceded by a special children’s concert at the newly renovated Miller Park on Saturday at 10 a.m., featuring the Trash Can Band from the Arnold Elementary School, groups from Hamilton County Schools, and the String Theory Youth Internship.

In addition to keeping a busy concert schedule, Sandbox Percussion has also participated in various masterclasses and coachings at schools such as the Peabody Conservatory, Curtis Institute, the University of Southern California, Kansas University, Cornell University, and Furman University, coaching students on some of the most pivotal works in the percussion repertoire.

Sandbox also presents an annual NYU Sandbox Percussion Seminar, which invites percussion students from across the globe to rehearse and perform some of today’s leading percussion chamber music.

Founded in 2009 by pianist and Artistic Director Gloria Chien, String Theory brings acclaimed chamber musicians from around the world to perform in the intimate setting of the Hunter Museum of American Art.

Individual concert tickets are $35 for Hunter members, $45 for non-members, $10 for students with a valid student ID, and $25 for groups of 20 or more people.
