Josh Davis of Cleveland, Tn., was one of the last contestants chosen Monday night to compete on the popular singing competition show, “The Voice,” on NBC TV.

Davis, 20, was the last of 12 artists or duos to be selected on the team of singer Kelly Clarkson during the Blind Auditions, when coaches can only hear the contestants, not see them.

After Mr.
Davis sang the song, “Too Good at Goodbyes,” both Ms. Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson hit their buttons to turn their chairs where they could see him for the first time and let him know they wanted him on their team. Adam Levine, another celebrity coach, could not turn his chair because his team was already full.

Mr. Davis — who selected Ms. Clarkson as his coach after both she and Ms. Hudson gave him a sales pitch — was the third-to-last contestant selected during the final hour of the Blind Auditions, with coaches Blake Shelton and Jennifer Hudson later filling their teams.

The Southeastern Tennessean will compete in the next round, called the Battle Rounds, in which two contestants from the same team sing a song together and their coach decides which one will move on to the next round. The Battle Rounds began in the second hour of the show Monday, but he did not compete.

Ms. Clarkson’s team is being aided by another celebrity coach, Thomas Rhett, during the Battle Rounds.

Davis had said in the introductory video shown before his taped performance that he works as a personal trainer, and video was shown of him at the Cleveland Family YMCA. He was formerly in a three-boy band that tried to be a Christian version of One Direction, he said.

After he told the coaches he was from Cleveland after singing, Adam Levine, one of the other coaches, said he did not realize there was a Cleveland, Tn.
