Erlanger Health System is proceeding with the construction of a Radiation Oncology Center on the East Campus.
It will include the installation of a linear accelerator at the Erlanger East Medical Office Building that is rising rapidly.
Britt Tabor, chief financial officer, said the building was set to be ready this fall. However, he said it is ahead of schedule and should be open this summer.
Erlanger is cooperating with Johnson Development on the project on Gunbarrel Road.
Erlanger plans to eventually purchase three linear accelerators from Elekta at a cost of $9 million. The other two will be added later to replace current models at the Third Street Campus.
The new center will have 80,000 square feet. Erlanger will be occupying 48,500 square feet, while Johnson Development will be renting the remainder.
Officials said it is part of the strategy to develop a comprehensive cancer program at Erlanger.
Outpatient cancer patients are expected to increase by 13 percent in the next five years and 22 percent in the next 10 years.
