Longtime Teacher And Vice Principal At Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Catholic School

JoAnn C. Johnson, age 83, died peacefully at home on January 17, 2018, surrounded by her beloved husband and family.

She was born in June, 1934, in Chattanooga, to the late James R. and Catherine Chamberlain. She attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help School and Notre Dame High School. She graduated from Sienna College in Memphis, TN.  She was an active member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

JoAnn married Bennett A. Johnson, Jr. in 1959, remaining married for 59 years. Together they raised five children and are proud grandparents of 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was a native of Chattanooga and was well known by many Catholic school children as “Mrs. Johnson”. She served as a teacher for 29 years (1970-1999) and as the vice principal for many years at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School. She was an avid gardener and active member of the Murray Hills Garden Club. She raised many beautiful roses.

She was a dearly loved wife, mom and “g ma”.

Survivors include her husband, Bennett A. Johnson, Jr., children, Ann Pierce (Kevin) of Marietta, Ga., Art Johnson (Karen) of Red Bank, Joseph Johnson (Jeana), Beth Benson (Mark), Carol Thompson (Scott), all of Chattanooga, grandchildren, Joseph Johnson,Jr., of Brooklyn, New York, Trey Wease of Eureka, Ca., Ben Johnson of Chattanooga, Travis Benson of Maryland, Katy Johnson of Chattanooga, Cay Hendrickson of Atlanta, Shelby Wease of Salt Lake City, Utah, Shelby Benson of Chattanooga, Margaret Pierce of Marietta, Charlie Johnson of Chattanooga, Daniel Pierce, Anna Pierce both of Marietta, Cole Thompson of Chattanooga, Caroline Reider, Nicholas Johnson, Chamberlain Johnson of Red Bank, and Elli Wease Benson of Chattanooga.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 23, from 10-11:45 a.m. at the Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel with a mass following at noon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family for a reception in the Parish Life Center after mass.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road, Chattanooga, Tn. 37412.
