Roadrunners Win In Double Overtime Over Bryan

Wednesday, September 13, 2017
DALTON, Ga. - Sophomore Santiago Moore recorded the golden goal with 1:04 left in the second overtime as #19 Dalton State outlasted a late charge from #17 Bryan (Tenn.
) to come away with a 4-3 win on Tuesdaynight at Lakeshore Park.

The game began with the Roadrunners pushing to apply early pressure on the Bryan (Tenn.) defense. It would pay off in the 6' when a corner kick bounced around the front of the Bryan net, only to be found bySantiago Moore who pushed to Isael Gutierrez for the 1-0 Roadrunner lead. The Lions would go on the attack next and strike in the 12' when Aaron Attree delivered a pass to a cutting Charlie Clarke for the equalizer. The game would be chippy early with multiple yellow cards being handed out by the referee in the rainy conditions, but both teams would continue the aggressive play. Dalton State would collect another goal before the half when freshman Kevin Villatoro body blocked a kick out of the goal from Bryan goalkeeper Alex Horton. Villatoro would slide by for the easy goal and a 2-1 lead.

Play would begin in half number two with Bryan looking to even the score. The Lions would attack, but would be denied on multiple occasions by Dalton State netminder Samuel Fraire. The Roadrunners would extend the lead to 3-1 when junior Daniel Valenciano got loose in the middle of the box on an assist from Santiago Moore. The lead would hold true until the 84' when Joao Paulo Pinheiro fired a shot past Fraire to shrink the Dalton State lead to 3-2. Bryan would strike again shortly thereafter, when in the 89' a handball was called in the Dalton State box. Bryan leading goal scorer Brad Spooner would step up and make the shot past a diving Fraire to tie it at 3-3.

The first overtime session would see both teams have scoring opportunities, but neither could convert. The turning point came whenDaniel Valenciano was called for a red card forcing the Roadrunners to play with 10 men for the rest of the contest. Dalton State would hold on the rest of the first overtime and looked to regroup in the second extra period.

The second overtime saw Bryan come out on the attack, looking to strike quick with the Roadrunners down to 10 men. The Dalton State defense would hold strong, backed by Samuel Fraire in goal who made an array of wonderful saves. The game was moving toward a tie contest, but with1:04 left, Santiago Moore found some wiggle room, making two Bryan defenders miss on his way to the golden goal and the Roadrunner win.

"Bryan College was in the NAIA National Tournament last year and they are a great team," said DS men's coach Kerem Daser. "Bryan head coach Drew Courtney is a class act. Our Roadrunner team never gave up, I am so proud of them."

The #19 Roadrunners will be back in action on Sunday when they face SCAD-Savannah at Lakeshore Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

Reflections On Billy Graham

Sandra and I are saddened this morning after learning of the death of Billy Graham. We rejoice today, because Mr. Graham once said "It will be reported that Billy Graham has died, but that won't be the truth. He said the truth is that he had only moved to a new location".  I remember when we named 15th Street as Billy Graham Avenue, his daughter Gigi came for the dedication ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: The Saturday Funnies

Every day, without exception, I find a number of “treats” in my daily dose of email. These funnies, and other pertinent information, are sent to me by a myriad of “Internet Buddies” who I repay by sending out some of the funniest that I collect. Think of it as sort of a “co-op” for my readers to enjoy. When The Saturday Funnies began last summer, it was what I still think is ... (click for more)
