If you long to live in the Shire or attend Hogwarts or you’d volunteer as tribute, Dalton State’s LibraryCon is the place to be this summer.
Roberts Library is gearing up for a reading program that caters to the geek in everyone. It begins June 5 and ends Aug. 3 with several literary activities planned, including book talks, movie nights, and a Harry Potter party. Participants are encouraged to read science fiction, paranormal, and fantasy literature.
“Whether you are on campus or a community participant, you’ll find opportunities to enjoy reading and share common activities with your friends and family,” said Melissa Whitesell, director of the library. “There’s something for all ages here this summer.”
Tuesday, June 6 at 12:15 p.m. in library room 235 – Wizards, fairies, and magicians are invited to make their own wands. All supplies will be provided, but registration is required. Register by emailing Whitesell at mwhitesell@daltonstate.edu.
Wednesday, June 14 at 12:15 p.m. in the library media lab – Cheryl Lindsey will present a book talk on “Mists of Avalon,” a retelling of the Arthurian legend by three women in Arthur’s life: Morgana, Guinevere, and the Lady of Avalon.
Monday, June 19 at 12:15 p.m. in library room 235 – Dean Hodge, a graduate of the Savannah School of Art and Design will share tips and techniques to create illustrations for manga, graphic novels, or comic books. This program is designed to appeal to anyone who wants to learn more about visual storytelling. Focus will be on the basics of illustrating sequential art, script interpretation, page layout, and panel composition. Hodge currently works as an educator at the Creative Discovery Museum in Chattanooga.
Tuesday, June 20 at 12:15 p.m. in library room 235 – Everyone is invited to make their own lotions and potions. All supplies will be provided to create scrubs, lotions, and potions, but registration is required. Register by emailing Whitesell at mwhitesell@daltonstate.edu.
Monday, June 26 at 12:15 p.m. in the library media lab – Dr. Jenny Crisp, associate professor of English, will present, “Harry Potter and the Extraordinary Other: Alienation and Heroism in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.” Much of fantasy literature focuses on young characters who feel out of place in their hometowns and families. Then they are called to action, and the outcasts begin to discover who they are and their extraordinary abilities. This talk will focus on the intersections between feeling left out, being extraordinary, and learning to get along with wizards and muggles.
Tuesday, June 27 at 6 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium – Jerry Drye, associate professor of communication, hosts sci-fi vs fantasy Family Feud. Contact Amy Burger, aburger@daltonstate.edu, for more information.
Wednesday, July 12 at 12:15 p.m. in the library media room – Crisp hosts another book talk, “Middle-Earth as Universe: World-building in ‘Lord of the Rings.’” J.R.R. Tolkien pioneered the modern fantasy genre with his books set in Middle-Earth, but what went into designing that fictional world?
Monday, July 17 at 12:15 p.m. in the library media room – Whitesell hosts a book talk, “Surveillance as Entertainment: Privacy and Human Rights in ‘The Hunger Games’ and Contemporary Society.” The talk will explore the battle to death and how it is broadcast as a form of entertainment and how that parallels modern society’s reality TV.
Monday, July 31 in the library media lab, an all-day event – Celebrate Harry Potter with a birthday party complete with butterbeer and golden snitches. Dress as your favorite character and compete in the costume contest. Make photos at the wizard photo booth and play a Quidditch match. Movies will be shown throughout the day.
In addition to the events, several sci-fi and fantasy movies will be shown throughout the summer. Movie nights are at 5:30 in the media lab on the following Thursday nights: June 8, June 22, June 29, July 13, July 20, and July 27.
Drawings for prizes will be held on June 14, June 20, June 27, July 6, July 12, July 17, and July 25 with a grand prize drawing on July 31.
