This week, State Rep. Kevin Brooks (R-Cleveland) was interviewed by Bob Cook of Forbes Magazine. The business news conglomerate wanted to learn more about a new law—House Bill 1063—sponsored by Rep. Brooks.
HB 1063 allows parents of student-athletes flexibility when it comes to excusing their student from athletic events that fall on school or religious holidays. This bill was passed by both the House and the Senate and was signed into law by Governor Bill Haslam on May 11.
“I brought this bill in response to the concerns of some of my constituency and with the hope that it will allow Tennessee families to actively participate in school athletics while also having time to focus on family and faith,” said Rep. Brooks. “I honestly did not foresee this legislation picking up national coverage, but I am hopeful that those who read this story in Forbes will be inspired to create similar changes within their community.”
