Local Cancer Survivors To Benefit From Zumba Dance Party

  • Thursday, April 6, 2017

The Healthy Living Center at North River is hosting its 5th Annual Zumba Dance Party on Friday at 6 p.m. to benefit the YMCA’s LIVESTRONG program, a 12-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors.  This event is presented by local Zumba Instructors and features a 2-hour dance party, with vendors and refreshments. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.  The event is general admission, with plenty of space to dance, $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

All proceeds from the Zumba Dance Party go to the LIVESTRONG program at the Healthy Living Center at North River.  This program has helped many cancer survivors return to life after cancer.

“LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free fitness-based program for cancer survivors,” Project Manager Michelle Johnson-McDougal said. “This is a community based program so you need not be a member of the YMCA participate.  We help cancer patients/survivors regain their strength as they move past focusing on the illness and start focusing on a healthy future.”

"The LIVESTRONG program supports the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their normal life or their 'new normal.' The program is conducted outside of medical facilities to emphasize its focus on health, not disease, and is available to any qualifying community member, regardless of whether or not they are a member of the YMCA. In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, YMCA staff and members," officials said.
