The CCS girls 4 x 400 relay team won the Chattanooga Little Caesars Individual Championships on Friday at Red Bank. Their 4:03:87 time was 15 seconds better than second place. The time was not only a personal best and school record for the team but the top Class A/AA time in the state going into the post-season.
CCS also won the 4 x 200 race.
CCS head coach Daniel Russell was glad to see his team run well.
"These ladies committed longs hours in the weight room, on the track, and came focused to compete at this level," Russell said. "We can certainly drop more time, but to race like this just over 15 seconds ahead of the next closest team isn't easy to do mentally, our coaching staff is so proud!"
The four-woman team represents each class at CCS. Laura Beth Turner is a freshmen, Sarah O'Shea is a sophomore, Olivia Hoffman is a junior and Cassie Curry is a senior.
Hoffman also finished first in the 400 Friday night.
Russell has been helping the team not only with the physical aspect but also the mental aspect of running their race.
"We went into the race thinking race strategy," Russell said. "We worked all week on developing a strategy and agreeing that whether ahead or behind the race is the same. We are determined to compete at the highest level as we head down this post season road.
Friday's race included the top runners from the area.
CCS now sets their site on sub-sectionals which are May 9 at Red Bank High School.
With another race like Friday's race, they will be running for a state title in Murfreesboro on May 25.
