Lee Women, Men Second At Gulf South Conference Championship

  • Monday, April 24, 2017

The Lee women's golf team slipped from first to second after 36 holes of play at the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Monday from Callaway Gardens Golf Club.

The 13th-ranked Lady Flames dipped to 313 after an opening round score of 303 for a 617 total. No. 16 West Georgia fired a 298 in round two (604 total) and will carry a 13-shot lead over the Lady Flames heading into Tuesday's final round.
Junior Sam Burrus is still in the medalist hunt but saw her 70 in round one balloon to 80 in round two under another difficult weather day with rain and winds at the Lake View Course. Burrus is sitting at 150 just four shots back of Ye Yun Jin from West Alabama who is at 146 after posting a 74 today. West Georgia's Maria Torres is second at 147 after shooting the low round of the day with an even-par 72. Taylor Sarratt (UWG) and Lauren Lamm (UWF) join Burrus in third at 150.

Anne Hedegaard led the Lady Flames with a five-over-par 77. She is tied for eighth with teammate and fellow freshman Haverly Harrold (77, 78). Junior Caroline Moore equaled her first round with another 79 and is tied for 14th while freshman Annika Gino was two shots better from her first round 81 in carding a 79.

No. 12 West Florida sits in third place with a 622 team total. West Alabama follows at 625 and Shorter rounds out the top five with a 652.

"We had too many silly mistakes today," lamented head coach John Maupin. "We really didn't do a very good job staying focused during points of adversity. Tomorrow is going to be better though, I really believe in this group, it's not over yet."

The Lady Flames will look to put the pressure on West Georgia tomorrow as they hope to make up a 13-stroke deficit. Lee will get the final 18 holes under way beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The No. 6 Lee men's golf team sits firmly in second place after shooting a 290 in round two of the Gulf South Conference Tournament from Callaway Gardens on Monday.

Unfortunately for the Flames the team they are chasing, West Florida, is No. 1 in the nation and looking to rewrite the GSC records books as we head to the final round on Tuesday. If West Florida is able to put together a 288 or better on the final day, they will break a GSC record that has stood since 1979.

As Lee was shooting a solid 290 led by Shea Sylvester's one-over 73 the Argonauts were carving up the course for the second straight day and posted a 280. Lee sits at 586 and 25 shots back of West Florida's 563.

Chandler Blanchet followed his opening round 66 up with a 67 today and is nine-shots ahead of second place and teammate Henry Westmoreland (72, 70). Bryce Geraghty makes it three-straight West Florida players on the leaderboard after shooting even par both days for a 144 total. Lee's Sylvester is tied for fourth at 145 with Mississippi College's Gregory Causey.

Flames heavy hitting junior Corey Sheppard carded a 74 and is tied for sixth at 146. Matt Johnson was three strokes better in round two in posting a 73 while senior Adam Wright showed his poise in posting one-under par 71 after tallying a 78 yesterday. Freshman Scott Odell continued to prove he can handle the pressure of postseason golf with a 73 in round two and is tied for 11th at 149.

Following Lee in third place is Mississippi College. The Choctaws dipped from an opening round 294 and second place to a 306 and are 14 strokes back of the second place Flames. North Alabama (604) and Valdosta State (610) round out the top five teams.

"It was a really solid team round today. We got great effort from all five guys and it was a great sign having everyone in play all day," said a pleased head coach John Maupin. "We were just some made putts away from a really great round."

The Flames will get the final round of the GSC Tournament under way bright and early beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
