Lee Softball Sweeps Trevecca Nazarene

The Lee softball team swept past old rival Trevecca Nazarene with a pair of 3-2 victories on Wednesday afternoon at Butler Field.

Two freshmen stole the show as Taylor Moran recorded the win in game one and was credited with the save in game two while Abby McKinney drove in three runs on the day and pitched six quality innings to earn the game two victory in the circle.

GAME 1 – LEE 3 TNU 2
McKinney delivered two RBI and Leigh Beatenbough and Moran (7-3) combined to shut down the Trojans at the plate as the Lady Flames took the opening game, 3-2.

McKinney tied things up with a single down the right field line in the third inning and gave Lee the lead for good with a clutch two-out single to center field in the fifth inning.
The freshman now has nine RBI in her last three games and leads the team with a .393 average and 38 RBI.

Beatenbough started and worked 4 2/3 innings allowing two runs on five hits. She struck out four but struggled with her command as she gave up five walks. Moran came on in relief and tossed the final 2 1/3 innings to secure her seventh victory of the season. The freshman from Chattanooga surrendered just one hit and had three punch outs.

Savannah Carr (4-4) was the tough luck loser for the Trojans as she allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings. Sammie Joy Ivy worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning in relief.

After the Lady Flames surrendered the lead in the top the fifth inning sophomore Stevie Baird answered right back in the bottom half with a RBI double to center field to score Kayla Louie and tie things up at two.

Aston Stowe had two singles in the contest while Danielle Tyson singled and scored twice for Trevecca. Mary Collins drew an RBI walk in the fifth inning. Alex Richardson drove in the other run with a single up the box in the third frame.

GAME 2 – LEE 3 TNU 2
McKinney improved to (6-3) in the circle as she tossed six innings allowing just one run on six hits for the Lady Flames while striking out a pair.

Moran came on to work the seventh and earned her conference-leading fifth save of the year. Moran worked around some trouble to preserve the win as she allowed three hits and one run.

Lee would score three runs despite only two hits in the contest. Kayla Louie drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second before Abby McKinney tripled home a run in the fourth inning and came all the way around to score herself on a throwing error by the second basemen. Alison Meadows recorded the only other hit as she led off the contest with an infield single.

Ashton Stowe led the way Trevecca as she went 3 for 4 and drove in a run. MaKray Odom added two hits and scored run while Bailey Alexander also tallied two singles.

The Trojans jumped on the board in the first inning as MaKray Odom stole second and scored on a throwing error. Stowe added the second run in the seventh inning with a one-out single before the rally was short-circuited by Moran.

"Abby has battled an injury so today was a good day for her and didn't walk anybody and let her defense work behind her. Trevecca is a good team, always competitive and went to a regional last season," said Russell.

Raygn Hall (4-8) was the losing pitcher as she allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings. Three errors by the Trojans caused only one of those runs to be earned. Morgan Powell was called on in relief and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

The win improves the Lady Flames to 24-10 overall. The loss drops the Trojans to 14-17.

"This was big for us. We don't have time to take a break during the week. It's a learning experience for our young players with all the midweek rainouts we've had but wins are always important so we'll take this and get ready for the weekend," concluded Russell.

Lee will head on the road this weekend to square off with GSC rival West Alabama. The three-game set begins on Saturday at 1 p.m.
