Less than a week ago, the Covenant men's tennis team suffered a tough 5-4 loss to Piedmont at home. On Tuesday afternoon in Demorest, the Scots avenged that loss in a big way as Covenant took three close victories in doubles play and then stormed to a 7-2 victory over Piedmont at the Burgen Tennis Courts.
The win gives Covenant sole possession of first place in the USA South West Division at 4-1 in league play. The Scots improved to 8-8 on the year overall. Piedmont drops to 5-8, while suffering its first conference loss to go to 3-1.
Logan Hull won the match-clincher for the Scots at No.
3 singles over Jackson Hill. It was Hill who gave Piedmont the win last week with a three-set win over Hull, but Hull avenged that loss as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory on Tuesday.
The tone of the match was set in doubles play as Covenant won all three matches. Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox were 9-7 winners at the top spot over Hill and Nathan Metzger, while Hull and Micah Fox won 8-4 at No. 2. Connor Shimmel and Trey Wood outlasted Kanler Cumbass and Harrison LaBolitta 9-8 (7) to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles play, Cox gave the Scots a 4-0 lead with his 6-2, 6-0 win over Bryan Barnett, Cox's sixth straight singles win, before Hull clinched the match with his win at No. 3. Harvie was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Metzger and Fox completed the scoring for the Scots with his 6-4, 6-4 win over Cumbass.
