The Lee University Symphony Orchestra will present its spring concert in Pangle Hall on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The evening’s performance will feature the six Student Concerto Competition winners: Danae Bromley, oboe; Maryna Kysla, piano; Sophie Lockhart, alto saxophone; Kristiana McCombs, cello; Caitlin Overton, soprano; and McKenzie Stephens, mezzo-soprano; along with graduate conductor SeokJoon Keun directing Mozart’s “Overture to the Marriage of Figaro.”

Robert Bernhardt, artist-in-residence and director of the Lee Symphony, will conduct the remainder of the program which will include the Berceuse and Finale from Stravinsky’s ballet, “The Firebird,” as well as Howard Shore’s Symphonic Suite from “The Lord of the Rings.”

“This program is particularly challenging, and especially fun, because we have so many talented soloists and great music from such a variety of composers,” said Maestro Bernhardt. “Also, over the past few years, the musicians in the Symphony have expressed their interest in performing film music, so we’re giving it a ‘go’ on this concert with John Whitney’s arrangement of Howard Shore’s Oscar-winning score to ‘The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.’”

Maestro Bernhardt joined Lee's School of Music in the fall of 2011. He also serves as music director emeritus and Principal Pops conductor of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and Principal Pops conductor of the Louisville Orchestra and Grand Rapids Symphony. He was formerly the music director and conductor for 19 seasons with the CSO, and he is the first to hold the title emeritus. He is also a frequent guest conductor for the Boston Pops and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

The Symphony Orchestra ensemble of select instrumentalists performs one major concert each semester. Its musicians frequently participate in operatic, choral, and other concerts on campus.

The concert is a free, non-ticketed event, and is open to the public.  For more information, call 614-8240 or email music@leeuniversity.edu.
