Cheek, William "Garvin"

  • Tuesday, February 21, 2017

William “Garvin” Cheek, a lifelong resident of Polk County, born March 14, 1935, passed away peacefully at the home of his longtime companion and caregiver, Sharon Roberts on Sunday, February 19, 2017. He affectionately referred to her as "Miss Florence". Garvin felt like she was his "own personal nurse".

He was a member of Old Ocoee Baptist Church in Benton, Tn.  He was a graduate of Polk County High School and Tennessee Wesleyan College. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from Bowater.

He raised registered black angus cattle as a hobby farmer and was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association.  He enjoyed angus cattle sales, attending his grandsons, sporting events, and took great pleasure teaching Brenley new things especially their bird book and watching her play and cook with "Nana".  He appreciated being able to attend revival services held by Daniel Stewart of Robbinsville, NC.

He was predeceased by his parents, William Bud and Stella Waller Cheek; a son, Todd Cheek; a sister, Janette McClure; and brother in law, E.L. Bowers.

Survivors include his son, Ty Cheek; grandsons, Cameron and Blake Cheek all of Cartersville, GA; his longtime companion and caregiver, Sharon Roberts of Cleveland; sister, Margie Bowers of Etowah, TN and brother in law, Charles McClure of Delano, TN;  honorary granddaughter who called him "Papman", Brenley Evans of Cleveland; several nieces and nephews, as well as his church and revival family and friends.

A celebration of his life was held with family and a few friends at his bedside on Feb. 14. His wish was to be cremated and have no formal visitation or funeral service. During his time of illness, Garvin relied heavily on one of his favorite passages, Philippians 4:11 to be content whatever the circumstances.

Arrangements are by Covenant Funeral & Crematory; Crox family owned and operated, www.CovenantFuneral.com.
