Lee To Host Couples’ Retreat Saturday And Sunday

  • Monday, February 20, 2017

Lee University’s Marriage and Family Therapy and Play Therapy Center will host the Hold Me Tight couples’ weekend enrichment experience, “Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love” on Saturday and Sunday.

The conference is an attachment and evidence-based workshop created by Dr. Sue Johnson, an author, presenter, and leading innovator in the field of couple therapy. Using Dr. Johnson’s method of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, the weekend workshops will equip couples to use attachment and emotion-focused strategies to improve relationship satisfaction, intimacy, trust and safety, thereby decreasing relationship stressors and strengthening couples’ relationships, said officials.

“No longer is love a mystery – research on the science of love now shows us what works and how partners can better understand, respond, engage and communicate by utilizing real-life, practical skills for creating conversations for connections,” said Constance Ratcliff, clinic director of LUMFTPTC.

The workshop will cover informative topics such as the science of love, understanding attachment needs, common relationship stressors, methods for repairing relationship injuries, keeping love alive, building engagement and connection, and the power of love.

Hold Me Tight will incorporate fun partner exercises, research-based relationship information, breakout sessions, and couple training activities during the conference.

The retreat will take place Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and resume Sunday, from 1–5:30 p.m. There will be a $30 fee per couple, which will cover the cost of the workbook. Snacks and drinks will be available throughout the conference, with an hour lunch break on Saturday.

Facilitated by Lee’s Marriage and Family Therapy graduate interns, the event will take place in the George Johnson Lecture Hall, in Lee’s Humanities Center, Room 104.

This workshop is not suitable for couples experiencing violence, infidelity, and/or severe mental illness. Lee Counseling Services are available for couples’ therapy by appointment year-round.

For more information or to register for the workshop, email Lee’s Marriage and Family Therapy Center at dsheffey@leeuniversity.edu or call 614-8089.
