Technology: The Virtual Drug

  • Thursday, December 14, 2017

The truth is you're probably reading this on a mobile device or your computer. As a matter of fact, I’m typing this down on a MacBook Pro. The point is technology is everywhere. It engulfs like a tsunami engulfs a village, only a few ever escape. In fact, it took me two hours to start this paper because I was so hypnotized by phone, checking my Instagram and seeing what the next hip trend would be. The fact is that every minute that we spend mindlessly gazing into the little screen that we carry everywhere and value ever-so preciously, we miss out on what's right in front of our faces. We need to stop staring at useless information and start integrating with the vivacious, vibrant world right in front of us. Because in a couple of years our world might start losing its charm.

Okay, now that you checked your phone again let's talk facts. Most people in this generation always have their phones with them. We even take them to the most outlandish places including the bathroom, the bathtub, funerals, and even skydiving. According to addictivetips.com, 91 percent of millennials use their phones while they poop. Addictiontips.com also stated, that 80 percent of millennials sleep with their phones directly on their beds because the get anxiety when their phones are not with them. This all unites to create a system in which many younger adults rely on their phones and cannot do without. I fear this is why so many younger people do not use logic and do not know how to do things with their hands. How many times have you heard “Oh I will just look it up on google”. I can bet at least once or twice a day. This just comes to show you that humans are becoming more and more zombie-like and foolish, because we can always count on our trusty phones. If we didn't have our phones or if the world lost power, I think we would suffer because we wouldn’t know what to do.

Ready Player One. That is the title of one Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movies. I feel it could actually show how our world will be within a couple of hundred years. It takes place in a modern time in which the whole outside world is destroyed, but no one cares because they all live in the virtual reality where anything is possible. They care about what they can do in a fictitious video game more than what happens to their physical world. What I’m trying to get to is at what point will we stop are zombie-like actions and pay attention to the issues in the real world. Steven Spielberg, the famous director of multiple movies including Player One describes it best, “Technology can be our best friend, and technology can also be the biggest party pooper of our lives. It interrupts our own story, interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, to imagine something wonderful.”

I was watching a video of this popular youtube and social media star, KSI, who was having an event. As soon as he appeared on stage a majority of people reached into their purses and pockets and pulled out their phones instead of enjoying the opportunity. They would rather share this moment with their “friends” online than enjoy the once in a lifetime opportunity happening a couple of feet away from them.

Technology also shoots down the social interactions that could occur every second. Nowadays every restaurant, bar, or coffee shop has at least one example of this. Two people who should be enjoying their food and chatting, sitting there mindlessly checking social media, the news, even sports scores, but yet not uttering a single world. Imagine your first date, you scored the most beautiful girl at the school and as soon as you sit down to eat, she pulls out her phone. You try again and again to start a conversation, but your attempts become utter failures. All she says is what she wants to eat and thanks for the food. Is that the kind of first date you want?

Now, of course, I think phones and tablets are the benchmark and start of a modern and fascinating way to learn and enjoy leisure time. I believe we just have to use them in moderation.
If we don't solely rely on and thirst for the minute we can use are phones, then I believe the world will flourish without completely changing it. If we use our phones in a intelligent way and just not a way to dull and fade out the real world then it would be amazing. The truth is though unfortunately we don’t. We just use them to pass the time and live in fantasies that we wish we had but are too apathetic and not motivated to get.

“Life is what we make it out to be”. I know that old fashion quote is a bit cliche, but it’s true. We have to put away our screens and integrate into the jubilant, jaw-dropping world we have to preserve it. If we focus too much on the virtual we lose sight of our friends, family, pets, and environment. We become the zombies of the world. If we want to better ourselves and enjoy life more then we must ignore the fantasy. Of course, I would love to be a rich and powerful man with a mansion in a video game, but I also want to be able to create a life in which I can look back in say, “Wow, I just did that, and it was amazing.”

I’m going to leave with a quote from a popular photographer for Time Magazine and National Geographic, Rick Smolan, “Every time there's a new tool, whether it's Internet or cell phones or anything else, all these things can be used for good or evil. Technology is neutral; it depends on how it's used.”
