Avid Sports Fan Played At UTC And As A Semi-Pro With Swedish Basketball League

Richard Joseph “Rick” Muckenthaler, 64, of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2017.
 
A native of Oak Ridge, Tn., he attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Chattanooga.

An avid sports fan, Rick played basketball at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Carson Newman College.  He went on to play professional baseball and basketball and played semi-pro basketball in the Swedish Basketball League.

He was a graduate of Carson Newman College and did post graduate work at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Rick was in sales and management most of his professional career and had worked for Marshall Mize Ford Dealership in Hixson.

He delighted in his grandchildren and in helping his daughters any way he could, especially with yard work and had coached them in sports when they were younger.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, Francis J. and Margret Muckenthaler; brother, Randall Muckenthaler and sister, Deborah Muckenthaler.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Gayla Valentine Muckenthaler; daughters, Kristin Muckenthaler and Jenny Muckenthaler (Adam) Jones; two grandchildren, Savannah Jones and Tyler Jones; sister, Peggy (Stan) Jordan; sisters-in-law, Marsha Wright, Karen Muckenthaler and Pam (Al) Miller; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. on  Saturday, Nov. 25, at St. Stephen Catholic Church followed by a funeral mass at 12 p.m. with Father Jim Vick officiating.  Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
