Covenant Women Win 4-0 Over Wesleyan

  • Saturday, October 21, 2017
On a day set aside to celebrate the accomplishments of five seniors, it was sophomore transfer Addy Cronan that provided the fireworks during the match as she scored a hat trick with an assist to lead the Covenant women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Wesleyan at Scotland Yard.

Before the match, Callie Bader, Kayla Bailey, Grace Bartelt, Rebekah Gravitt, and Landry Jenkins were honored for their contributions to the program during their careers. Gravitt, who is out for the season with an injury, was put on the field one last time before the match officially began.

The win also secured the No.
3 seed from the West for Covenant in next week's USA South Tournament. The Lady Scots will host a first round match on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

When play started, Covenant (10-6, 5-2 USA South) controlled the tempo from the outset. Cronan notched her first goal of the day in the 14th minute as she put away a penalty kick after being taken down inside the box.

Despite outshooting Wesleyan 8-1 in the opening period, Cronan's PK would stand as the halftime score.

But in the second half, the Lady Scots and Cronan struck quickly. Cronan scored her second goal in the 46th minute when she dribbled towards the box, then got around one defender to clear space inside the 18 before scoring from 12 yards out to give Covenant a 2-0 lead. In the 49th minute, Cronan was at it again as she got a short pass from Kyra Duble and found the back of the net from short range for a 3-0 Lady Scots advantage.

Covenant wasn't done yet as the Lady Scots scored again in the 51st minute. Cronan also played a hand in the goal as her cross into the box found the feet of Lizzy Hightower who got her shot past Wesleyan keeper Carlee Dykes for the score.

In all, Cronan totaled seven points with her three goals and one assist. The sophomore leads the team with 10 goals and seven assists on the year. Hightower's goal was her fifth of the year.

Covenant ended with a 21-3 edge in total shots and 6-0 in corner kicks. Rachel Lemay and Bailey combined for the shutout at the net. Dykes made seven saves for Wesleyan in the loss.

Covenant will play its final regular season match on Monday against regional foe Emory. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Scotland Yard.
