Grand Juror Says Corrections Officers Need Better Pay, Free Parking; Ask Mental Health Professional Be Added To Jail Staff

  • Monday, January 23, 2017

A member of the Hamilton Grand Jury said in a final report that corrections officers at the county jail should get higher pay and have free parking.

The report, written by an elementary teacher serving on the panel headed by DeAnna Anderson, also says staffing needs to be increased so that two jailers do not have to control 50 inmates.

It says, depending on their shifts, the jailers have to pay to park.

Also, they sometimes have mandatory overtime and are unable to go on scheduled vacations due to work requirement.

The grand jury member said she was "saddened to learn of the high number of inmates that have mental illness."

The report says, "The county jail is not set up to serve, not should it be used as a mental health hospital.

"I believe there should be a full time mental health professional to help take care of those inmates, write prescriptions, and help train the corrections officers on how to best interact with those individuals."
