UTC Women Host Two SoCon Hoops Games

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team will host Western Carolina and UNCG this week in Southern Conference action. The Mocs have won 11 consecutive SoCon regular season games and 44 straight home court matchups against the league.
 
Chattanooga is 9-8 overall and leads the league with a 3-0 mark with wins over Samford, Mercer and ETSU. The Mocs average 60.9 points and 33.4 rebounds per game. Against the SoCon, UTC leads the league in eight categories including scoring (70.3), free throw percentage (.750), field goal percentage (.523) and 3-point field goal percentage (.404).
Chattanooga is second in scoring defense, allowing opponents just 54 points per game and 3-point field goals made (6.3).
 
Jasmine Joyner leads the Mocs with 11.9 points, 9.5 rebounds per game and a .467 field goal percentage. She leads the nation with 72 blocked shots and 4.24 blocked shots per game, climbing to 16th all-time in the NCAA.
 
Chelsey Shumpert, Queen Alford and Lakelyn Bouldin are all second on the team in scoring with 10.5 points per game. Shumpert is shooting 90 percent from the free throw line and has made 24 from beyond the 3-point line. Bouldin leads the team in 3-point shooting with 35 on the year and is shooting nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc.
 
Jim Foster, in his fourth year at the helm of Chattanooga, has 92 wins with UTC and 874 over his 39-year career. He ranks eighth all-time among NCAA Division I coaches.
 
The Mocs will host Western Carolina Thursday, January 19 at the McKenzie Arena. Chattanooga and the Catamounts have met 81 times dating back to 1979.  UTC is 70-11 against WCU and won 32 of the first 34 matchups. The Mocs are riding a 13-game win streak and have won 19 of the last 21 meetings. The Catamounts last win was a regular-season overtime game in Cullowhee.
 
Western Carolina is 5-14 on the year and 0-4 against the conference. The Cats average 57 points per game and give up 65.8 ppg. They are shooting 36.2 percent from the field and 30.5 from the 3-point line. At the charity stripe, WCU is shooting 69.6 percent and averages 37.2 rebounds per game.
 
Sherae Bonner leads the team with 10.2 points per game and is the only player in double figures. She is shooting 41.4 percent from the floor and 75.4 percent from the free throw line. She leads the Southern Conference in rebounding with 9.7 boards per game and has 32 blocked shots.
 
Head coach Stephanie McCormick is in her second year at the helm of the Catamounts. She has a 12-36 overall record in those two seasons.
 
On Saturday, the Mocs will host UNCG in the first of a double header with the men’s team. The Spartans are 10-9 overall and 1-3 in league play. After dropping its first three games against the SoCon, UNCG came away with a 64-40 win over Samford at home. The Spartans are averaging 64.6 points per game, outscoring their opponents by more than five points per game. They are shooting 40.9 percent from the field, 28.7 from beyond the arc and have 40.4 rebounds per game.
 
Nadine Soliman leads the Spartans with 17.7 points per game and has a team-best 39 3-pointers. Te’ja Twitty has a team-best .535 shooting percentage and is second on the team in scoring with 10.3 points per game. She leads UNCG with 7.4 rebounds per game.
 
Head coach Trina Patterson is in her first season with the Spartans. She previously served as an assistant to former Elon head coach Karen Barefoot at Old Dominion. Her previous head coaching experience is 17 combined seasons at Albany and William & Mary.
