Dr. Nathaniel Carter, Sr., 79, of Chattanooga, died on Saturday, January 14, 2017 in the Hospice Care Center. 

He was the successful pastor of the Greater Faith Temple Missionary Baptist Church for the past 35 years.  He had an associate’s degree in OJT from Chattanooga State Technical Community College, bachelor of theology degree, master of divinity degree and a doctorate of theology as well.  He was a certified member of the Prison Fellowship of the Southeastern Region, a Kentucky Colonel of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, former Assistant Dean of the Chattanooga District Association, Past President of the Clergy Kononia of Greater Chattanooga, an Ambassador for the National Baptist Convention USA, and presently the Congress President of the Pilgrim Joy District Association.  In his earlier years, he sang with many gospel groups. 

Dr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents, Lube and Minnie Carter. 

Survivors include his devoted wife of 48 years, Willie Eva Carter; sons, Nathaniel Carter, Jr., Gary Carter, and Quinton Carter; daughters, Marilyn “Lucy” (Ronald) Jones, Elizabeth (Donnie Lee) Carroll, Corine Carter-Murphy, and Althea (Kenneth) Worthen; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Annie Mae Howard of Atlanta, GA; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. 

He will lie in state on Sunday, Jan. 22, after 1:30 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.  Visitation will then be from 6-8 p.m. at Greater Faith Temple Missionary Baptist Church. 

Funeral services will be on Monday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m. at Olivet Baptist Church with Bishop Kevin Adams, Sr. as the eulogist.  Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.
