WoodSongs Dalton Concert Series Begins With New Coon Creek Girls

  • Tuesday, January 10, 2017

The WoodSongs Dalton 2017 Concert Series will host the New Coon Creek Girls, a Kentucky based bluegrass band, and  the Lang Sisters at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, at Stage 123 in downtown Dalton.

Review for New Coon Creek Girls:

In 1979 John Lair, the founder of Renfro Valley, formed the New Coon Creek Girls with the intention of carrying on the traditional music that was played by the original "Coon Creek Girls" on his famous Barn Dance from 1930s through the 1960s.

Following the success at Renfro Valley, the New Coon Creek Girls traveled extensively, playing and singing their own brand of acoustic music throughout the United States and abroad. For nearly 20 years the NCCG's were a staple at festivals, fairs, concerts and college venues.

Although there were several personnel changes over the years, it was the combination of Pam Gadd on vocals, banjo and guitar, Wanda Barnett on vocals, guitar and fiddle, Vicki Simmons on vocals, bass and claw hammer banjo, and Pam Perry Combs on vocals, mandolin and guitar that experienced the most popularity. It is that lineup of women that has come together after a 27 year hiatus.

The current director Tom Brown says, “This year will be the fourth year that the veteran female band has performed at WoodSongs Dalton, and out of all the bands that have played in Dalton, these gals seem to generate the most audience enthusiasm. Every time they have performed, I am bombarded afterwards with ‘You need to bring them back next year’”, adding “they’re top notch veteran performers who seem to really connect with the Dalton audience.”

Opening for the New Coon Creek Girls will be the Lang Sisters, Jessica and Chloe from Raleigh, N.C., who play a mixture of bluegrass and folk music. Their music has been featured on the Tobacco Road radio program and they are scheduled to appear on the PBS national television program Song of the Mountains in early 2017.

The highly rated concert series features emerging and established performers of Americana, Country, and Bluegrass music, whose performances also benefit local non-profits. Many of the performers over the years have been Grammy nominees and recipients and or received recognition for their talents by the International Bluegrass Music Association.

The concert series will be held at Stage 123 at 123 Gordon St. in the heart of downtown Dalton. WoodSongs Dalton is sponsored in part by the Downtown Dalton Development Authority and the Dalton Convention and Visitors Bureau. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the DEO Clinic, a 501 (c)3 nonprofit medical clinic that provides medical care to low income uninsured residents of Whitfield and Murray Counties.
